Where you place your hibiscus decides almost everything: how it grows, how many flowers it produces, and how healthy the leaves stay.
In this guide we share what we've learned in our nursery in Madeira — Europe's largest hybrid hibiscus nursery — about the perfect location for hibiscus plants both indoors and outdoors.
☀️ Light — the #1 factor
Hibiscus are sun-lovers. They need at least 6 hours of bright light per day to flower well.
❌ Worst spot: a dark corner, a north-facing window, or behind a curtain.
If a hibiscus does not bloom, the problem is almost always too little light — not too little fertiliser.
🌡️ Temperature Hibiscus love warmth.
- Ideal range: 18–28 °C
- Tolerates short peaks up to 35 °C if well watered
- Below 10 °C growth stops
- Below 5 °C the plant is at risk
Never place a hibiscus near a cold draught, an open winter window, or an air-conditioning vent.
🏡 Indoor placement
- A bright window with stable temperature is perfect year-round.
- In winter, move the plant closer to the window — light is the limiting factor.
- If your home is dark, add a plant grow light (full spectrum, 6–8 hours/day). This single change often turns a non-blooming hibiscus into a flowering machine.
- Avoid placing it directly above a radiator — dry hot air burns the leaves.
🌳 Outdoor placement
- From late spring to early autumn, hibiscus love being outside.
- Acclimate gradually over 7–10 days — start in shade, move into the sun.
- A spot with morning sun and afternoon shade works well in very hot climates.
- Protect from strong wind — broken branches mean lost flowers.
❄️ Winter location In central and northern Europe, hibiscus must come inside before night temperatures drop below 10 °C.
- Cool & bright (10–15 °C): the plant rests, water rarely.
- Warm & bright (18–22 °C): the plant keeps growing — water and feed lightly.
- Warm & dark: the worst combination. Leaves drop, pests come. Add a grow light.
🚿 Humidity bonus Hibiscus love humidity. Group plants together, place a tray with water nearby, or mist the leaves in the morning.
- Bright — at least 6 hours of direct or near-direct light
- Warm — between 18 and 28 °C
- Stable — no cold draughts, no temperature shocks
- Sheltered — protected from strong wind
- Humid — never next to a hot radiator
