Hibiscus are tropical plants. In central and northern Europe they cannot stay outside in winter — frost kills them within hours. The good news: with the right winter location, your hibiscus will survive the cold months and bloom even better the following year.
This is the winter care method we use at our nursery in Madeira and recommend to all our customers across Europe.
🌡️ When to bring hibiscus inside Bring your hibiscus indoors as soon as night temperatures drop below 10 °C — usually mid-to-late September in Germany, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.
Do not wait for the first frost. Even one cold night can damage the roots permanently.
🏡 The two winter options

OPTION 1: Cool & bright (10–15 °C) — the resting method
- Unheated bright room, conservatory, stairwell, cool bedroom
- Plant goes into rest mode: little growth, few or no flowers
- Water rarely — only when the soil is dry 2 cm deep
- No fertiliser
- Pests are rare in cool air
OPTION 2: Warm & bright (18–22 °C) — the growing method
- Living room near a south window, or with a plant grow light
- Plant keeps growing and may even flower
- Water normally, soil slightly dry between waterings
- Fertilise lightly every 3–4 weeks
- Watch for whiteflies and spider mites — dry heating air attracts them
❌ The worst option: warm & dark A warm living room with little light is the #1 killer of hibiscus in winter. Leaves drop, pests multiply, the plant weakens. Solution: a full-spectrum grow light, 6–8 hours per day. This single change saves thousands of hibiscus every winter.
🚿 Watering in winter Most winter hibiscus die from overwatering, not from cold.
- Check the soil with your finger before every watering.
- Use lukewarm water — never cold tap water.
- Reduce frequency by half compared to summer.
🐛 Pest check Inspect leaves weekly. Whiteflies, spider mites and aphids love dry heated indoor air. A quick shower in the bathtub once a month keeps them under control.
✂️ Pruning before winter A light pruning in autumn helps the plant fit indoors and encourages a bushier shape in spring. Don't prune hard — save the strong cut for late February.
🌸 Bringing hibiscus back outside in spring

- Wait until night temperatures stay above 10 °C (usually mid-May).
- Acclimate gradually over 10–14 days: start in shade, slowly move into full sun.
- Sudden full sun = sunburned leaves.
- Bring inside before 10 °C night temperatures
- Choose cool & bright OR warm & bright (with grow light if dark)
- Water rarely, never with cold water
- Check for pests weekly
- Acclimate slowly in spring
Hibiscus that survive a good winter often bloom even more beautifully the next summer 🌺
