HIBISCUS WATERING SECRETS NO ONE TELLS YOU 🌿

HIBISCUS WATERING SECRETS NO ONE TELLS YOU 🌿

Welcome to our Hibiscus care series where we dive deep into the art of growing stunning hibiscus plants.

We will be your hibiscus whisperer, and today we're discussing the #1 question we get: HOW TO WATER HIBISCUS?

Spoiler: It's not about watering more. It's about watering smart 🧐

🌸 Hibiscus loves humidity — but hates soggy feet Think tropical rainforests: lots of air moisture, but well-draining soil. Overwatering = root rot, fungus, pests. Underwatering = wilted leaves, stunted growth. 😬 All you need is to find a right balance, to feel your plants.

🛑 The biggest mistakes we see: ❌ Watering on a schedule (hibiscus don't wear watches 😉) ❌ Watering too much, while giving the plant too less light (hibiscus are not vampires, they need a lot of sunlight/lamplight 🤗) ❌ Using chlorinated tap water (hello, nutrient lockout!) ❌ Ignoring soil dryness (don't make it cry for water!) ❌ Using underpot (if you use it, make sure that after EACH watering, you pour all excess water out)

✅ The pro watering rules:

Use a matchstick, your finger, or lift the pot (heavy = don't water, too light = hydrate, it should be balancing in between). With time and experience you will learn to see immediately if your plant is thirsty or too overwatered. The perfect soil should be just a bit moist, never ever wet or muddy.

  1. Check the top 2–3 cm of soil — if it's dry and a pot is light, it's thirsty.
  1. Never water a hibiscus plant if the soil is wet!
  1. The "Palm Test" (only if there are some visible problems with the plant): place the pot on your palm, carefully remove the pot for 1–2 seconds, and peek at the roots. Don't touch them, don't disturb. Healthy roots = white & firm. Brown, thin, or mushy = root issues! 👉 If roots look unhealthy, adjust your watering ASAP!

Rainwater > filtered water > tap water (let it sit 2–4 days to dechlorinate). Chlorinated water and other harmful substances found in tap water can cause the soil to become alkaline, making it difficult for the plant to absorb nutrients.

  1. Water type matters:

Water at 20–25 °C (not ice-cold, not boiling).

  1. Temp check:

Water early AM so roots drink up before nightfall.

  1. Morning is best:

🌞 Seasonal hacks: 🔥 Summer: Water every 1–3 days (if bright light + >20 °C). Drain excess! ❄️ Winter: Cut back to 1× every 4–7 days (less light = less drink). If you don't have enough plant light, please water rarely, only when the pot is dry.

💡 Want to know if your hibiscus is happy?

A healthy plant with healthy roots will always have bright green leaves 🍃 and will dry out every 1–2–4 days, depending on the season. If your plant has been standing wet already for a week, add some light or check the roots!

MOST IMPORTANT TIP!

The more leaves your plant has, the more water it needs — and vice versa: the fewer leaves on your plant, the less water it needs. It first has to grow stronger roots and leaves 🍃! Easy, right?
